It is understood Mr Leonard Granville, 42, a marketing director for a Ford motor dealership in Northern Ireland, had gone off on his own for a quiet drink. When he did not return the following morning, it was assumed that he had stayed the night with a friend in Marbella.

This study, conducted in the Netherlands, compared the vitamin C status of three groups of elderly women aged 65 years or older: 54 nursing home residents, 29 women living in service flats where meal service was provided by the nursing-home kitchen, and 52 women living independently in the community. Food consumption data were obtained using a modified dietary history; for the nursing home residents, all foods served for one day and the returned leftovers were weighed, and amounts of food served and returned for an additional nine days were estimated by the dietitians. Blood samples were collected for nutrient analysis. Dietary vitamin C intake was significantly lower among the nursing home residents than in the other two groups. The nursing home residents also had significantly lower plasma vitamin C levels, and the proportion of subjects with vitamin C levels in the deficient or marginal ranges was much higher in the nursing home residents than in either of the other two groups. Thirty-five percent of the women living in nursing homes had deficient plasma vitamin C levels, and an additional 23% had levels in the marginal range. Four percent of the women living in service flats had deficient levels and 4% had marginal levels. None of the women living independently had deficient levels; 2% had marginal levels. The nursing home residents had lower vitamin C intakes than the other women because they ate less and because they selectively avoided some foods that are important sources of vitamin C, particularly fresh fruit. The food preparation and distribution practices used in the nursing home also caused a substantial loss of vitamin C, but the loss was not much greater than that which is assumed to occur in home food preparation.
A total of 91 women, aged 30-69 years, participated in the study; 50 were nonsmokers and 41 were smokers. The subjects completed questionnaires on smoking status and dietary habits and provided blood samples for nutrient analysis. Serum levels of [alpha]-carotene, [beta]-carotene, cryptoxanthin, and lycopene in smokers averaged only 71-79% of the concentrations found in nonsmokers. Dietary differences could not account for this effect. Mean serum concentrations of vitamins C and E and lutein/zeaxanthin were only slightly, and not significantly, lower among smokers, and concentrations of vitamin A were actually higher. The results for carotenoids are generally consistent with those of other studies. The lack of an association between smoking and serum vitamin C levels may reflect the relatively high vitamin C intake of this study population. The authors observe that the negative effect of smoking on serum concentrations of antioxidant carotenoids may pose a serious health risk in low-income populations already at higher risk for many chronic diseases.
Some epidemiologic studies have associated higher intakes of the antioxidant nutrients, especially vitamin E, with reduced risks of coronary heart disease. In some studies, this association has been observed for dietary vitamin E, but in other instances, the relationship was seen only in persons taking high doses of vitamin E as supplements. Protective effects of the other antioxidant nutrients - vitamin C and carotenoids - have also been observed in some epidemiological studies, but not in others. In the study population as a whole, there appeared to be a trend toward reduced coronary risk with higher vitamin E intake, but it was not statistically significant. Among women who did not take vitamin supplements, dietary vitamin E intake did show a significant inverse association with coronary heart disease risk. Women in the highest quintile of vitamin E intake had less than half the risk of death from coronary heart disease of women in the lowest quintile. Foods associated with reduced risk included margarine, nuts and seeds, and mayonnaise and creamy salad dressings. Intakes of vitamin A, vitamin C, and supplementary vitamin E did not appear to be associated with the risk of death from coronary disease. These findings suggest that vitamin E intake may be protective against coronary heart disease in postmenopausal women and that such women can lower their risk without using vitamin supplements. However, the authors could not rule out the possibility that vitamin E consumed in food might be a marker for other dietary factors associated with coronary risk. The lack of effect of vitamin E in supplements should be interpreted with caution because information on the duration of supplement use was not available for this cohort and because relatively few women used high-dose supplements of vitamin E.

Q: How long is protein powder good? I have a tub I bought last year that I never finished. Is it still OK to use? Q: Is it worth paying a little more for top-shelf liquor? a: If you hate waking up with a nasty hangover, then shelling out a few extra bucks for your next drink would probably be wise. That way, you can be sure youre buying the purest alcohol possible–with the fewest hangover-inducing impurities. Why the inflated price tag? Well, the process of making most top-shelf liquor is a long one: Premium tequilas can be distilled for as long as five years, while most high-end rum is aged in charred oak casks for 30 years or more.

John Osbornes first play, Look Back in Anger, had its premiere in 1956 and he called it a formal, old-fashioned play. His second play, The Entertainer, was set during the Suez Crisis and opened in 1957. What was new about both was that the characters were real working-class people. No real parts had been written about working- class characters before - only “cheeky chappy” roles such as Doolittle in Pygmalion. When asked if I wanted to go to see The Entertainer I was uncertain. Why? I had worked backstage on a brilliant amateur production (by the Tavistock Rep) in 1969 and it had stayed in my mind, with few productions since to affect the fond memories. How wrong I was to hesitate. For me this production, under Sean Holmess direction, ticks all the boxes and putting it on 50 years after it was set is brilliant timing. So much of it resonates in 2007: a misguided war in the Middle East and young men dying needlessly; the obsession with skinny/size zero women; fading performers (or “personalities”) trying to reinvent themselves; feelings against politicians of either party; comments about the Poles and the Irish; and confusion over national identity.

The Wallmaster line of packaged terminal air conditioners is a cost-effective heating and cooling system. The units feature mechanical thermostat limiters and built-in dampers that give operators more ways to control costs. They fit into standard 16-inch by 42-inch sleeves. Top-mounted return-air filters are readily accessible.
Air ConditionerAir conditioning systems vary considerably in size and derive their energy from many different sources. Popularity of residential air conditioners has increased dramatically with the advent of central air, a strategy that utilizes the ducting in a home for both heating and cooling. Commercial air conditioners, almost mandatory in new construction, have changed a lot in the past few years as energy costs rise and power sources change and improve. The use of natural gas-powered industrial chillers has grown considerably, and they are used for commercial air conditioning in many applications.

Team building.
Making teams more productive is a constant issue for most managers, according to Marcus Goncalves, author of Team Building. “Productivity is, of course, the essence of what makes business competitive, but it is particularly important in times of economic slowdown such as the one we are currently experiencing,” the author says. This book is mainly designed for those who have been assigned team building and management responsibilities; for project and team managers, project and team leaders, or anyone performing in those roles. The book is divided into two sections. The first provides the fundamentals of team building, covering such topics as fostering a culture of change and mastering team building and management. The second section provides additional perspectives and tools for developing teams, such as valuing team diversity and team-building activities.
WINTER IS here, I can tell. Since the end of October, everyone seems to be talking about “team-building”. People talk with a new vigour and determination to “really make things work this time”. One option often advocated to resolve the team-building conundrum is what is euphemistically described (for trade- mark reasons) as “working in challenging environments” or “working outside”. The argument goes that managers have to work in a constantly challenging and changing environment they need to be able to respond quickly; so, put them in an unfamiliar environment with unfamiliar challenges and they can learn from their experiences - “using transferable skills”. This was recently described to me by an eminent banking client as “going to the Lake District to bite the heads off rabbits”. Just because the England football team and the Shadow Cabinet have done it, does not mean it works. If an organisation has deep-seated problems then how will making managers pump high levels of adrenaline around their bodies for a long weekend help their overall performance? And what about the poor soul who feels that the whole experience is bordering on bullying or totally irrelevant to their ability to sell laptop computers in the Milton Keynes regional network? Some team-building programmes do not seem to cover the basics - to manage the team effectively you need to understand: the significance of “the team”; the power of a “self-managing team”; what makes the team “effective”; how to achieve “good teamwork”; how to analyse and review team performance, and how to put your learning into practice. To build a team you need to establish some sense of urgency and direction; set performance related tasks and goals; get people to work together and build networks; do not emphasise hierarchies. Do not confuse the sizzle with the steak. Robert Craven is Associate Fellow at Warwick Business School, Visiting Professor at Toulouse Business School and Managing Director of The Directors Centre.

IASB ANNOUNCES AGENDA OF TECHNICAL PROJECTS After consultation with the Standards Advisory Council, national accounting standard setters, regulators, and other interested parties, the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) has determined an initial agenda of nine technical projects. Projects intended to provide leadership and promote convergence include the following:
REVISED BEE CIRCULAR ISSUED Existing accounting practices for BEE transactions might not be comparable because of the different accounting policies that may be followed until IFRIC 8(AC 441) and AC 503 are effective. The circular points out that, in terms of IAS 8(AC 103) - Accounting Policies, Changes in Accounting Estimates and Errors, paragraph 30, where entities have not applied IFRIC 8(AC 441) and AC 503 in determining their accounting policies for BEE transactions, there is a requirement to disclose that fact and the known or reasonably estimable information relevant to assessing the possible impact that its application will have on the entitys financial statements in the periods of initial application. This circular is available on the SAICA website.
ACCOUNTING PRACTICES COMMITTEE ISSUES EXPOSURE DRAFT ON IMPROVEMENTS TO INTERNATIONAL ACCOUNTING STANDARDS The exposure draft is the first product of the IASBs improvements project, which aims to raise the quality and consistency of financial reporting by drawing on best practice from around the world, and removing options in international standards. The improvements project is a first step by the IASB to promote convergence on high quality solutions in its objective to establish a globally accepted set of accounting standards. The release of the exposure draft marks the IASBs initial response to the demand for the continued development and rapid improvement of international standards by market participants, including regulators, through the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), national standard-setters, the IASBs Standards Advisory Council and other commentators. The project has been given added impetus by the European Unions proposals to require publicly listed companies to use international standards from January 2005.

TRAINING OF specialist language teachers must improve and increase if the Government is to hit its target for every primary school pupil to learn a foreign language, education inspectors say. Ofsted, the schools watchdog, found that trainee French teachers recruited in a ministerial drive to encourage children aged 7 to 11 to learn a foreign language were not highly skilled in the language. Some had only a GCSE in the subject and some could not pronounce common words properly or use basic grammar, a report on primary modern foreign languages concluded. The report said a rapid expansion in the number of primary language specialists being trained was needed if the target of providing language lessons for all primary pupils by 2012 was to be met.

WASHINGTON — Construction of new homes and apartments plunged by 17.6 percent in March, the biggest decline in 14 years and another possible indication that rising interest rates are beginning to take a toll on the economy. Meanwhile, wholesale inflation shot up 0.7 percent as energy prices soared. The Commerce Department reported Tuesday that builders started construction on new homes and apartments at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.84 million units in March, down from 2.23 million units in February. “This is a bit of a shocker,” said David Seiders, chief economist for the National Association of Home Builders. “But I dont think this represents a fundamental downshift in the housing market. There were special factors behind it.”

ALCOHOLISM Approximately 85% of alcoholics and alcohol abusers receive no treatment for their condition, according to a 1983 Office of Technology Assessment report, which estimated alcohol abuse to be responsible for up to 15% of the Nations health care costs. Alcoholics use significantly greater amounts of medical services than do nonalcoholics for a wide range of physical problems that include organ damage (particularly the liver), brain dysfunction, cardiovascular disease, and mental disorders. Alcohol is involved in half of all accidental deaths, suicides, and homicides, and in 43% of all traffic fatalities. There are approximately 10.6 million American adults who can be classified as alcoholics, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and an additional 7.3 million “alcohol abusers,” who have been arrested or involved in an accident, or whose health or job performance has been impaired due to out-of-control drinking. The disease has such far-reaching ramifications that each alcoholic devastates the lives of at least four other people.
Sleep problems are more common among alcoholics than among nonalcoholics (Aldrich 1998; Ehlers 2000; National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism [NIAAA] 1998). For example, in the general population, insomnia in the previous 6 months affected 18 percent of alcoholic people, but only 10 percent of nonalcoholic people (Brower et al. 2000). Among patients admitted for alcoholism treatment, rates of insomnia are even higher, ranging from 36 percent to 72 percent, depending on sample characteristics, the instrument used to measure sleep, the amount of time elapsed since the last drink, and the presence of other disorders (i.e., comorbidity) (see table 1). Alcohol-related sleep problems, however, encompass more than symptoms of insomnia. For the purposes of this artide, the term “sleep problems” is used interchangeably with the terms “sleep disturbances,” “sleep abnormalities,” “impaired sleep,” and “disrupted sleep.” All of these terms refer both to subjective complaints about sleep, such as insomnia, and to objectively measured abnormalities in sleep, which can be determined using a procedure called polysomnography. (This technique is described in more detail in the following section.) The consequences of sleep problems in alcoholics are economically and clinically significant. Overall, Stoller (1994) estimated that approximately 10 percent of all alcohol-related costs could be attributed to insomnia. Given that alcohol problems cost the United States an estimated $184.6 billion in 1998 (NIAAA 2000), alcohol-related insomnia may have cost the country around $18.5 billion that year. Furthermore, sleep apnea–a sleep disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of breathing cessation that occurs more frequently in alcoholics than in nonalcoholics–has been associated with increased mortality from heart disease and stroke (Aldrich et al. 1999). Other potential consequences of sleep disturbances, which can be exacerbated by alcoholism, include impaired daytime performance (Roth and Ancoli-Israel 1999), memory dysfunction (Roehrs and Roth 1995), and increased risk for depression (Gillin 1998; Weissman et al. 1997). In the general population, insomnia has been associated with premature mortality after controlling for physical health and other risk factors (e.g., Pollak et al. 1990), although other studies did not find that effect (e.g., Althuis et al. 1998).

Banner, like Brown and the Rock and Ice men, was a Lancastrian, but began his outstanding climbing career while studying chemistry at Bristol University in the early 1950s. Here he was one of the pioneers of the strenuous, fin-gery climbing on the forbiddingly steep limestone of Avon Gorge. Bold, extreme climbs such as Great Central Route and the aptly named Desperation, climbed in 1953, epitomised Banners vision in opening up lines on a formidable cliff few had dared to consider seriously as a climbing ground. Out of term time, he kept his standard topped up on the highly technical sandstone of his local crag at Helsby while based at his parental home in Lancashire. Banner soon became almost as famous for his feats of derring-do on his Vincent motorbike as on his climbs, reaching over 100mph on a straight bit of road going past Helsby Grammar School on the way to his local pub in Frodsham. “In the pub he would outline his next plan, spoken in a slow nasal drawl,” recalled Jones, “fingers delicately gripping the top of his pint pot while he slowly ran them round the smooth rim.” Following a two-year break for National Service, Banner plunged back into the fray, determined to smash the psychological barrier created by the Rock and Ice on the crags of Britain by becoming the first to repeat many of their fabled routes. His obsessive pursuit of this task distracted him from pioneering many new routes, something he later regretted. But those he did create tended to be extremely noteworthy.

NLBMDA also launched the Direct Dealer program last year, giving dealers the means to support their national association directly for the fast time. This couldnt have happened at a better time, with so many issues affecting dealers and our industry now at the forefront. With Direct Dealer support, NLBMDA is building the resources to keep accomplishing great things. For 2006, NLBMDA will be making unprecedented efforts on Capitol Hill to introduce legislation that will help protect dealers from meritless product lawsuits, which are becoming more prevalent in the lumber and building material industry. The support of Direct Dealers is critical to these efforts.

The Concrete Centres activities and achievements have made significant progress during 2006. The UK has one of the lowest per capita consumptions of cement and concrete in the world. The Concrete Centre has been set up to address this by ensuring that the key decision makers and influencers in the construction industry are made fully aware of the wide range of benefits and attributes that concrete has. The most critical project stages that assist in the formulation of a decision as to whether or not to go with concrete are the feasibility study and detailed design. It is at these stages that the frame material is determined. Therefore, it is essential that the decision makers involved are able to make a fully informed choice in terms of structural design, construction methods, fire performance, environmental and acoustic performance and thermal efficiency. We in the concrete industry need to ensure that best practice information on the most efficient forms of concrete construction is available to design teams. The resources and advice provided by The Concrete Centre prove invaluable at this critical stage of the design process.
Much of the material stems from practical problems encountered by Neville in consulting work or in litigation. For copies, contact the American Concrete Institute on +1 248 848 3800, e-mail: bkstore@concrete.org.

Data for June and July show the first signs of softening in the construction sector. According to seasonally adjusted data, the value of construction put in place in July was approximately at the same level as in June and thus 7.4% lower than in May. In the five months to May, the value of construction put in place was 38.7% higher than a year ago; in June and July the difference narrowed to 16.7%. Employment in the construction sector continued to rise. In 2006, the number of workers employed in the construction sector was 7.5% higher than in the previous year. In the first seven months of 2007 it surged by 11%. The hiring of foreign workers has also been on the increase (see SEM 7/2007: 11). The number of workers rose particularly in building completion and general construction, similarly as last year. In terms of worker status, sole proprietors and their employees recorded higher growth rates. Increasingly many firms face difficulties in finding labour. According to business trends in construction, 51% of construction firms reported “a shortage of skilled labour” as a limiting factor to production. If answers are weighted by the number of employees, this share is even higher (58%) - the highest in five years (since these data have been available). The shortage of skilled workers became a significant limiting factor in the second half of 2006 (see graph), coinciding with the boom in construction activity in that period.
After the robust growth in 2006, construction activity posted even higher growth rates in 2007. The value of construction put in place surged by 18.5% over 2006. Activity in civil engineering increased by 24.7% as a result of the construction of transport infrastructure. The construction of buildings grew by 15.5%; within that, non-residential construction was up 20.2%, whereas activity in residential construction decreased by 0.9%. Based on detailed data on issued building permits, the vigorous construction of hotels appears to have continued last year, probably along with the construction of wholesale and retail trade buildings. In interpreting the figure on the value of residential construction put in place we should bear in mind that these figures exclude the activity of smaller firms (see the note under the table), where the construction of buildings is the main activity. Stronger growth was partly linked to favourable weather conditions, especially in the first half of the year. This is corroborated by the business trends regarding the limiting factors in construction. The share of firms that reported bad weather conditions as a limiting factor was much lower in the first half of 2007 than in the previous year. The weather was also more propitious than the year before in the third quarter, but it was less favourable in the fourth quarter, which affected growth in the latter part of the year. The growth in the number of employees increased further last year. In 2007 the number of people employed in the construction sector was 11.3% higher, on average, than in 2006. The number of workers by activity rose particularly in building completion; in the latter part of the year it also increased in general construction. In terms of employee status, higher growth rates were recorded in the number of sole proprietors and their employees.

Air Travelers Tech Perspective If you count yourself among the ranks that racks up more frequent flyer miles than you know what to do with, chances are youre anxiously waiting for the day that reasonably priced, always-on Internet connectivity becomes a reality — both on the ground and in the air. Weve asked a leading expert on travel and air transport to help us provide perspective on the present and future outlook for airport and in-flight technology. Here are highlights of our conversation with Aram Gesar, Editor of AirGuide Magazine and AirGuideOnline. Unless business takes you to small markets or youre a member of an airline airport club, youre probably still in search of Wi-Fi nirvana. Large airports have been slow to establish wireless networks because of their size, but smaller airports are offering free Wi-Fi to attract business travelers, says Aram Gesar. Check out Wififreespot.com for a list of all the airports offering free wireless access. At the larger airports there are often a variety day pass and one-time use options available ranging from $5 to $15. Aram suggests Wi-fihotspotlist.com to locate hotspots in major metro areas. Looking to the future, Gesar says, we can expect to see technology in airports to mirror what frequent flyers use at the office and home, but this will be a slow evolution based on customer feedback and demand.

ow-priced real estate and an easier pace of life convinced Tim and Lisa Wilk to choose Topeka over Denver and Grand Junction, Colo. Car dealer Ed Bozarth offered to transfer Tim Wilk, 38, an automotive technician, to one of his dealerships. The Wilks picked Topeka because they said they believe the community offers a better lifestyle for less money. This spring, they bought a three-bedroom, two-bath house at 2631 S.E. 32nd for $119,500. The house has nearly 1,800 square feet; a two-car garage; and a big yard for their son, three dogs and a cat.
New beginning The session is expected to include a Bill to abolish hereditary peers rights to sit and vote in the Lords. School bonus CHRIS WOODHEAD, the Chief Inspector of Schools, received a bonus of more than pounds 8,600 earlier this year, it was confirmed yesterday. Urban renewal THE Government came under cross-party pressure yesterday to boost urban regeneration and curb the spread of new housing estates into the countryside. n The House will not be sitting today.

The first camera dates back to ancient Greece, with the pinhole camera obscura. But while the camera - in its simplest form-worked, there was no way of preserving images. The first permanent photograph was made in 1826 by Joseph Nicphore Nipce using a sliding wooden box camera made by Charles and Vincent Chevalier in Paris. The first digital camera, developed in the 1970s, weighed 8lbs, was the size of a loaf of bread and captured black and white images on a digital cassette at a resolution of .01 megapixels. Steven Sasson, an engineer working for Eastman Kodak, is credited with the design. Technology has come so far and so fast that anything currently on sale below four megapixels is of questionable worth because there are already camera phones - notably by Nokia and Sharp (for Vodafone) that take three-megapixel pictures. More are on the way, meaning that it is hardly worth paying a premium on such low- quality pictures. At the higher-spec end, once non-professional photographers move past nine megapixels - more than adequate to enlarge to A3 print size - it becomes overkill. Expected developments in digi-cam technology include such basics as moving the power button further from the capture button - so a rushed attempt to take a picture doesnt turn the camera off - and obtaining better quality in poor lighting, currently a big d owner.
All the major brands, from Nikon to Canon and Pentax to Sony, offer point-and-shoot digital cameras. Even Hewlett-Packard has jumped on the digital camera bandwagon. According to Justin Porterfield, manager of the ZCMI Center Inkleys, the cost ranges from $100 to $1,000. One in the $500-price range will get you near single lens reflex quality, he said. According to Allred, most digital cameras have a small LCD monitor on the back that is ideal for composing and reviewing images. It also lets you magnify the images to check for accurate focus and small details. Most digital cameras use compact flash type I memory cards that allow easy downloading to a computer or printer through a USB port on the camera. This allows easy transmission of photographic data to a PC or Mac. Most digital cameras can record movies in AVI format with a duration of up to 30 seconds. The low-quality movies are really for e-mailing and not for television viewing.

Women who are not proficient in English can now receive translation services for some legal procedures that protect against domestic violence, thanks to funds from the STOP Violence Against Women Grant Program. The translation services will aid in the completion of petitions for orders of protection and provide translation services during the resulting hearings. Interpreting will be done by telephone for the filings; an interpreter will offer on- site services during subsequent proceedings whenever possible and will interpret by phone if prevented from attending court. The translating services bring Missouris state courts into compliance with Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which prevents discrimination on the basis of national origin. The Office of the State Courts Administrator aims for its brochures — printed in Bosnian, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese — that announce the new services to be displayed in venues where victims of domestic violence seek aid, including courts, law enforcement agencies, hospitals and shelters. The documents detail the signs of abuse, give instructions for receiving help and remind that eligibility for protection does not require citizenship or legal permanent residency.

At ten to five the sun rose. Me and the boy were seated in our directors chairs on the beach, mourning the embers of our dying fire. We were about midway along a five-mile curve of shingle, about 30 yards from the sea. There wasnt a puff of wind; the cigarettes-worth of smoke from our fire went more or less straight up. The waves collapsing on the shore were piddly. In spite of their lack of vigour, however, every other one washed up hundreds of tiny silver fishes that died in shining rows on the wet shingle. After the sun had cleared the hill by about half an inch (about quarter past) a figure appeared beside the shore to our right. He was casting his rod into the sea, catching a fish immediately, tossing it back, and moving along again. He was coming towards us. As he got nearer, we could see that apart from a satchel he was nude.
Shifting sand takes toll on animals, fish, people The rebuilding of Floridas eroding shoreline has received largely positive press since the federal government began such work in earnest during the 1950s. Protecting shoreline development has been the governments justification, and beach-town mayors have touted the tourist dollars and revitalization that sometimes have flooded oceanfront cities after the new sand was put in place. But the Sarasota Herald-Tribune found an environmental, financial and human toll thats not so scenic. It all began with Pearces death. Our initial investigation into it found another gruesome accident on a beach building project a few months earlier. Then another, and another, and another.

Some small business owners believe that they do not need to provide workers compensation coverage; others will go to extreme measures to try to avoid providing it; and still others dont provide it out of ignorance. The purpose of this article is to point out possible problem situations involving the use or non-use of workers compensation. Because each state has its own set of regulations, not all of these points will apply. If you dont already have a workers compensation rating manual, which provides the rules and rates for writing coverage in a given state, your states workers compensation rating bureau can tell you how to secure one. A section titled “State Exception Pages” will give you information regarding whether or not some of the points mentioned in this article apply in your state.

* NEW FINANCIAL BENCHMARKING REPORT FOR DEALERSThe Office Furniture Dealers Alliance ( OFDA), a segment of the Independent Office Products and Furniture Dealers Association ( IOPFDA) has released a new OFDA Dealer Financial Comparison Benchmarking Guide. The results of the study are based on the responses of 137 participating dealers who provided operating results from the 2001 calendar year.By using the OFDA Guide as a benchmarking tool, OFDA was able to determine that controlling key pro! it variables are of iar greater significance in achieving financial success than simply increasing annual revenue - a focal point of many dealerships. The dealerships surveyed for the report posted average 2001 revenues of $16.9 million, and a pre-tax profit of 0.94 percent ( or approximately $159, 900). In contrast, “high- profit” dealers posted average revenues of $13.5 million, but a pre-tax profit of 5.46 percent ( or $736, 850).

That, in essence, is the conventional argument on where the private shareholder stands. According to Sir Mark Weinberg, chairman of a committee set up by the Stock Exchange to examine whether the private investor is a dying breed, there is some truth in all this. But his committees report, published last month, predictably got a poor press, with most commentators saying that he had failed to come up with enough specific recommendations to reverse the trend. Sir Marks real offence seems to have been that he failed to criticise strongly enough the Stock Exchanges new rule allowing companies to exclude private investors from most new issues if they so choose. It was this decision which originally prompted the setting up of the committee. In addition, he said it was largely up to the financial services industry, rather than the Government or the Stock Exchange, to come up with ways of tempting more private shareholders back into the fold. Neither conclusion was guaranteed to win any plaudits from a constituency which prefers decisive-looking actions to well-meant words, and which has long marked the Stock Exchange down, not entirely without justice, as an enfeebled and not very effective organisation. Yet, in my view, Sir Mark is largely right on both counts. In fact, I would go further in saying that the outlook for private shareholding is probably brighter now than it has been for some time - partly because of new technology, and partly because of the recent changes in the financial services industry, which have introduced much more effective competition.

No shortage of storage in this kitchen remodel Chock-full of storage, this generous kitchen addition was annexed to the rear of the house. Among its space-expanding amenities are a 5 1/2-foot-long appliance garage, an eating and storage island, and a built-in desk for menu planning. Heart of the kitchen is a six-sided 9 1/2-foot-long island that provides storage for dishes, knives, and spices, as well as a cooktop and a snack counter serving four. For convenience, dishes are stored in the side of the island facing the sink and dishwasher. A U-shaped drawer for pots and pans pulls out under the cooktop.
Out for views, up for light: those are the directions this tall, four-sided bay takes to gain garden views. Since the shallow pitch of the existing roof would have cramped the high, open greenhouse look the Starrs wanted, designer Linda Thornton of Carmel, California, gave the bay an octagonal roof of its own. It rises almost 3 feet above the existing roof, radiating from a central point above the eave line. Half of it notches into the old roof; the other half extends beyond to top the four glass walls. Only three support posts obstruct garden views through the glass panes. Outside, a planter wraps around the base of the bay, softening the expanse of concrete patio.

This second-floor balcony off the master bedroom offers a good example of a very desirable feature that happened in a roundabout way. “The effect is so romantic,” says Houston architect Tom Wilson, who designed this new home. “But the reasons for it were practical.” Sun control on the first floor was also a consideration. There a large, south-facing window in the living room needed shading from the noonday sun. The architects solution was to design a master bedroom balcony that projects over the living room window below and acts as a canopy.
Unfortunately, I have to face the fact that I havent been a teenager for a while now and the bedroom of a rural housewife might not be such a draw. Still, that doesnt mean it isnt worth thinking about. I could put the camera in a room where the results might appeal to people who spend more time fantasising about country living than teenage girls. The morning-room (which still doubles as our drawing-room), for example. Im usually dressed when Im using it and if this house were open to the public that would be one of the rooms wed invite people to see. From our point of view the advantage of film over public access is that a camera is relatively unobtrusive, being unlikely to make a lot of noise or walk off with the snuffboxes. While a camera would offer website subscribers a true picture, not just of the room, but its use. Me opening my letters, smoking a Nicorette Inhalator. The room empty for several days. The dog wandering in. The room empty again. The children running through it. The room tidied by beautiful housekeeper in very short shorts. Then a climax - the room full of weekend guests saying indiscreet things. On reflection, perhaps the morning-room wouldnt be such a good choice. Or the dining-room. The telly-room is a possibility. It has a huge gothic fireplace, Peruvian mummy wrappings and Indian phallus coverers which give it the warmth and drama of a Hammer House of Horror film set. Furthermore, we spend a good deal of time in it. By evening youd get the children sitting together on one sofa cushion, their laps covered by a dozen smaller cushions, frozen as if in a photograph. By night youd see me shouting at the television or sobbing in front of it. The dog staring very intently at Peter. Peter fast asleep, dressed in a green wool, hooded kaftan. Tin Tin meets the leprechaun St Francis. And by day youd get me again, watching that lovely, lovely Ed Stourton on the 1 oclock news (well, clearly, its vital that Im up to the moment with current events. You never know when you might get the Call). The trouble is that while having a camera in the TV room would certainly give an authentic impression of country living, it could be argued that Internet surfers might confuse it with the website of someone who lives on entirely the wrong kind of estate. The kind with more drug dealers than gamekeepers. It would all be so much easier if I was a teenager. Which reminds me, there is the nanny. I grant you shes in her twenties, but that still makes her . . . months younger than me. Employers use spy cameras on their nannies these days, dont they? Why not just re-transmit the images on the Internet? I suppose she might not care for the idea. And theres probably some law against it. So, its back to my bedroom and my fantasy. There are 100 million people out there who want to see me in my bedsocks. And, if they are very lucky and have a spare 10, they can.

In the Yukon Public Schools board room, gifted students watched with wonder as authentic 19th century Cheyenne moccasins were presented to show how they reflected Native American trade. “The beads used in making these moccasins were manufactured in glass factories of northern Italy and Bohemia,” said Curator Jeff Briley of the Oklahoma Historical Society. “Through an intricate trading system, these beads came to the Great Plains of North America and were traded to Indians for hides and furs.” This amounted to a “field trip” for the students, but they stayed in Yukon while Briley and Byers demonstrated the trade significance and care of artifacts from the State Museum of History near the State Capitol.
By about 8,000 years ago, inhabitants of what is now the United States were making and wearing sophisticated sandals and slip-on shoes, according to researchers who analyzed a rare sampling of ancient footwear. Prehistoric North Americans apparently fashioned shoes in regional styles using a variety of materials and techniques, contend archaeologist Michael J. OBrien of the University of Missouri at Columbia and his coworkers. The design and weaving observed in the oldest specimen are about as complex as what we see in later ones that weve dated to around 1,000 years ago, OBrien says. These people knew exactly what they were doing.

Insurance: Does that word scare you? For some reason, it brings a chill to most people. Is it the word, or is it the fact that someone is usually trying to sell it in some form to you? If that is the case, get over it! Everyone is selling something - from the corner grocer to you. You hope when you walk into the room for a report of findings, that your potential patient will be “buying” what you have to say. Insurance is something that we need and have to have in some form throughout our lives. But most people really dont understand what it really is or how it works, or how much they really need. According to statistics, the typical household spends just $2,400 per year on insurance. (That assumes that your health insurance is under a group plan and you pay very little for it.) Its broken down like this: health insurance, $983; homeowners, $254; auto, $778; and life, $388. I am sure that most of you are paying much more for your coverage. The number for health insurance, I am sure, is very low. The homeowners insurance statistic might be closer to what you are spending, depending on the area of the country you live in and the size of your home. I am also sure that the amount for auto insurance is also way off the mark. The life insurance figure is up for grabs. Like I said earlier, the coverage is secondary; the premium is what is important.
INSURANCEAvailability of insurance allows individuals and businesses to purchase policies that provide protection from financial loss attributable to death, accidents, sicknesses, damage to property, and injury caused to others. The person or organization seeking to transfer riskthe insured (policyholder) pays a relatively small amount (the premium) to an insurance company (the insurer), which issues an insurance policy in which the insurer agrees to reimburse the insured for any losses covered by the policy. Insurers are able to provide coverage for virtually any predictable loss.
Our company is divided into four core business groups, representing the standard and surplus lines marketplace. Put them together and you have a rich portfolio of solutions for independent retailers, enabling them to compete effectively in the market.

Gry can call animals to the hunt, and Orrec has the ability to unmake life with a glance. But Gry doesnt want to betray the animals trust, and Orrec blinds himself rather than risk accidentally destroying someone. But choosing not to use their powers greatly upsets their parents and their lineage.

The idea of writing a wedding list stuffed with items they crave can send some brides and grooms into an orgy of grasping bad taste. Its important to emphasise that you want peoples presence rather than their presents. However, “asking for what you want has become more acceptable,” says Jo Ryde, gift list manager at John Lewis. “Its better for the guests because they are reassured that what they select is exactly what the bride and groom are after.” When putting together your list, include options for all price ranges. A 99p spoon may be all some guests can afford. Alternatively, groups of friends or family can club together to splash out on something more expensive. Make sure your partner is involved - youre not writing a letter to Santa, after all. Go for a mix of traditional and modern gifts, too: iPods and plasma televisions are popular with grooms, but your great-aunt might prefer to give you a tablecloth rather than a bit of technologically brilliant kit.
